A year on from the Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people, the shaky mobile phone footage of the burning building as great gobbets of flame fell through the night sky is still shockingly visceral. As are the shouts and screams captured with the footage as onlookers yell at people trapped in the building to “Get out!”Residents of the tower who managed to escape, and those who lost family and friends in the ferocious blaze, are interviewed here, along with a now retired firefighter who led his team into the inferno. There is anger at the emergency services’ advice to “stay put” and there are tears for those who didn’t make it out of the building to safety.

Marking the first anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy, this one-off special focuses on the survivors’ stories, piecing together the timeline of the tragic events that unfolded. Starting at the first report of the blaze at 12.54am on June 14 and continuing through to the moment the London Fire Brigade brought the fire under control 24 hours later, this film provides a vivid insight into the tragedy by using the testimony of survivors, eyewitnesses, people that lost loved ones and a firefighter.
